Classes will be grouped according to Style and Grade Level as follows:

Description |
Baroque | BA | Music to 1750, most pieces by Leopold Mozart and sons of
J.S.Bach, and later pieces clearly in Baroque style. |
Classical | CL | Music from approximately 1750-1825. One movement only of sonatinas/sonatas.
If the current RCM syllabus requires multiple parts, a student may choose to perform only a portion of the requirements. |
Romantic | RO | Music by or in the style of Schumann, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Grieg, Schubert (except his sonatas). Style takes precedence over
composer dates. |
Post-Romantic | PR | Impressionistic or moderately contemporary music, including most
pieces by Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Faure, Ibert, Turina, Albeniz, Granados, Scriabin, Kabalevsky, and most junior and intermediate
level pieces by Shostakovich, Prokofieff, and Khatchaturian. Style of piece takes precedence over composer dates. |
Twentieth and Twenty-First Century | TC | Includes most pieces by Bartok, Barber,
Schoenberg, Ginastera, Hindemith, Starer, Stravinsky, etc. Mildly contemporary pieces should be entered in Post-Romantic classes.
Original compositions using ragtime, jazz, and blues idioms, etc., may be entered here, but arrangements and transcriptions must
be entered in the popular music classes. |
Canadian | CA | Music by Canadian composers regardless of period or style. |
Popular Music | PM | Boogie, Blues, Pop, Jazz, Ragtime, Disco, transcriptions of
music from classics. Music of that style which is graded in RCM or Conservatory Canada syllabus could be in this class. RCM "study"
replacement pop selection list music may also be selected in this class. |
Adult | AD | For students age 18 or older, of all levels. |
Duet | DU | One partner to be at grade level entered; the other may be one grade higher or lower. Please register each student individually; fee is per student |
